Apple WWDC 2016
Hey guys and welcome back to another tech-savvy post! Apple had just recently revealed some new and exciting software updates at their Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) on June 12th and it certainly caught my attention. So here are the most notable updates that happened:
The renaming of OS X to macOS: Since the late 80s-90s the software that we all know and love powering every Mac on the globe is called OS X. It's name seems appropriate for it's time but if you look at the names of the other operating systems like tvOS and iOS the name doesn't seem to fit in. So what better way to astound audiences is by renaming OS X to macOS. Yes you heard that correctly now the operating system for Macs is called macOS. I personally think this is a good move since the name now fits in with the others, so good move there Apple!
macOS Sierra: What better way to introduce a new name is by revealing the new operating system on the same day with the new name. macOS Sierra gives the Mac a slew of new features that consumers will definitely be pleased with. Let's start with the biggest new feature, Siri on the Mac. You heard that correctly, Siri on the Mac. Siri is finally coming to the Mac after years of constant requests from consumers. On the Mac Siri functions almost similarly as to when you use it on an iOS device, but on the Mac Siri is way more capable and there are way more things you could do on the Mac with Siri than on iOS. For example you could ask Siri for documents that you worked on last week or even give a specific date of a document and it will show it to you. All in all I think Siri is a fantastic addition to the Mac and I will certainly be using it a lot when Sierra comes this fall. Another new feature added is Universal Clipboard, where you can copy something on your iOS device and paste on your computer without any lag, this is a major breakthrough in copy and pasting. You can do it both ways, this addition will certainly make completing tasks much more convenient. The Photos app also got a big update as now you can make small montages out of certain photos from the past, in other words a flashback kind of video. The most impressive update to Photos is now that it can recognise certain faces and name them to you, just like Google Photos. Another update Sierra gives is that now you can unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch, just simply open your Mac with your Apple Watch on and the Mac will unlock by itself since it already knows that it's you. The last major update is that now Apple Pay is available on the web, so you can easily buy clothes and other items online with Apple Pay and with a click of a button your purchase is transacted. iOS 10: It wouldn't be a WWDC without an iOS update. iOS 10 focuses on user experience and is designed to make everyday use of apps easier and more convenient. The update to Photos is the same as the Mac. The update to iMessage is where things start getting interesting, they added new features like enabling you to physically write your own message with your hands and now Emojis are implemented in a way that you can use them to replace certain words in sentences. Those are among the tons of updates to iMessage and if you want to find out more go to Apple's website. Raise to Wake is another convenient feature added, when you raise your phone it wakes up, simple as that. This makes it easier and quicker to read notifications and accessing your phone. Siri now is now open to apps, so now you can book a ride on Uber or send someone a message on WhatsApp. Also Siri is now open to developers, which is a huge announcement since now developers can utilise Siri's capabilities and hopefully enable it to work with third-party applications. Maps is now able to book a place at a restaurant and can even act as a GPS. The new Home app lets you control your home, from switching on/off lights to closing the garage door. This feature is only available if your home is compatible with the app. Now you can respond directly to someone in notifications and even view photos and videos. watchOS 3: Although I'm not too that familiar with watchOS some of the new features I saw were very interesting. Now watchOS 3 enables users to access their favourite apps faster by enabling you to place the apps on the dock of the watch. Also you can switch watch faces, this isn't available in previous updates, people are certainly going to love this because now they can switch their watch faces for different occasions. Finally Apple TV is getting an update, most of which are pretty small except for one thing: Apple will now let cable and satellite providers to create a universal login, so with one login only you have access to all your cable and satellite channels. You used to have to login every time you launch a different channel, now it's gone and it will certainly make users of Apple TV more satisfied. Well that's pretty much about it for WWDC 2016. Hope you guys enjoyed my somewhat in depth analysis of what's new. I'm just waiting for Apple's September event where I hope they will be revealing new hardware, possibly the iPhone 7 and maybe new MacBooks. Have an awesome day folks and see you in the next post, Adios!
