Apple Event September 2017

Well well well isn't it that time of year again for yet another Apple event! Hey guys and welcome back, today I will be talking about the highly anticipated Apple event that just happened 2 days ago. I will be highlighting the main products that Apple revealed and giving my opinions on them. Without further ado, let's get started.

First up they revealed the new Apple Watch Series 3, the successor to the Series 2. Aside from the usual spec bumps that is expected in any successor to any device, the Series 3 comes with cellular capabilities, something that the Series 2 didn't have. This means that you could make and receive calls to anyone anytime and anywhere. Cellular also means that you could enable 3G/4G on your Watch, which enables you to connect to the internet when there are no WiFi hotspots available. This means, in conjunction with Apple Music, you could stream over 40 million songs on your Watch, which is pretty impressive. They also highly emphasised on improving how the Watch will track your heartbeat and record data. With that in mind they implemented a new and improved heart rate monitor to make sure that the data the users are getting is more accurate. In my opinion, I think this is definitely a step in the right direction, and one upgrade that Apple Watch users (especially the fitness group) will love. The Series 3 also comes with new bands and watch faces. For more information on the new Series 3, visit https://www.apple.com/apple-watch-series-3/.

Next up they revealed the Apple TV 4K, which is an upgrade to the previous Apple TV in terms of video resolution. In fact, that's probably the only noticeable thing that was upgraded, aside from the usual spec bumps. In this part of the presentation they showed off how glorious the picture would look like when played on the new Apple TV, and with the inclusion of High Dynamic Range(HDR), the colours will look more crisp and more saturated. With the spec bump, the new Apple TV also allows users to play graphically demanding games as well, in the presentation they showed off a game called 'Sky', an open world co-op game designed by thatgamecompany. The game showed off its glorious graphics, thanks to the new Metal 2 framework created by Apple for developing games. Personally, I'm not that interested in this new Apple TV, although it looks great, it's not my piece of cake. For more information about the new Apple TV, visit https://www.apple.com/apple-tv-4k/.

Now comes the most hyped and highly anticipated part of the presentation, which is the reveal of the new iPhone/s. First up they revealed the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, and from first glance it looks exactly like the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, with all the usual spec bumps of course. What was different is the glass finish on the back of the phones, which enables wireless charging. Yes for the first time ever you will be able to charge your iPhones wirelessly, I don't know why they didn't implement it earlier but it's finally here. You charge your phone using a dock connected to the mains, and you just simply put your iPhone on the dock and it will start charging. Aside from that, there is not much to talk about the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, they'd be better off calling it the 7S and 7S Plus because there's not much of a difference between it and the iPhone 7. Personally I'm a bit disappointed, I feel like they could've done much more, but it is what it is. For more information on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, visit https://www.apple.com/iphone-8/.

Finally we come to the grand finale of the presentation, which is the reveal of the iPhone X. This phone was probably the most talked about phone of the year, and finally we get to see what it looks like. To be honest I already knew what it was going to look like due to the huge amount of leaks online, but nevertheless it always looks better when presented by Apple themselves. Everything is new about the iPhone X, from the screen to the design to the software. Let's start with the screen, and oh boy it looks stunning. An edge-to-edge display, covering almost all of the front of the phone with thin bezels. This has already been done by Samsung and various other smartphone brands, so I would not call it 'innovative', but at least they're following the trend. The display is now a 'Super Retina Display', with better colour gamut and colour accuracy. The back is also a glass finish which means that wireless charging is available, and the camera on the back is now vertical instead of horizontal, as well as having Optical Image Stabilisation on both cameras. The main and stark difference between this iPhone and previous iPhones is that there's no more home button. Yep, the button that lets you unlock your phone and various other functions is now gone, so how do you unlock you phone? Using your face. That's right, the iPhone X comes with a new feature called FaceID, where the front camera detects your face and unlocks your phone if it recognises it's you. Facial recognition is a difficult thing to execute, and it looks like Apple have done it. The absence of the home button also means that you will have to adapt to using gestures more frequently, like for example if you're in an app and you want to exit to the home screen, you simply swipe up from the bottom and you'll be back on the home page. There'll be a little line at the bottom to indicate that you could swipe up. I forgot to mention that there is a little notch at the top of the screen for the front cameras and sensors, which makes the front screen look a bit weird in my opinion. Usual spec bumps means that the iPhone X will definitely perform faster than previous ones. In fact, thanks to the spec bump the iPhone X can also handle Augmented Reality (AR) games, and they demonstrated that on stage. It looked really cool and futuristic, being able to project a game on your table and play it through your phone is unbelievably impressive. One last thing I want to mention is the introduction of Animojis, which are emojis that use the front facing sensors and camera to track your facial movements and translate those movements onto the emoji itself, creating a more personalised message to send to your friends and family. In my opinion, it's pretty impressive but also a bit unnecessary, I mean who would want to be sent a message of a poop saying "hi" to you in your friend's voice? Nevertheless it is a thing now and it's definitely something I won't be using for the rest of my life. Oh I also forgot to mention that the iPhone X costs $1000!? That's a bit overkill in my opinion, but oh well it's Apple it's their decision. In my opinion the iPhone X is a step forward in the right direction, but again I'm not a big fan of them taking away Touch ID and replacing it with FaceID. But what I do like is the new bezel-less screen and new design. For more information about iPhone X, visit https://www.apple.com/iphone-x/.
